Party Spoons

Here is a novel method of serving the food at your next kids party. Pictured above is a decorated Styrofoam cone with plastic spoons inserted into the sides. This project is not too difficult to achieve but there are a few steps in the process. Especially if you make more than one recipe to fill the spoons with! Marshmallow Spoon

The cone pictured has a coat of pink acrylic and a crepe flower on the top. You need to stick it to the serving tray with double sided foam tape to prevent it from toppling over when the spoons are removed.
Finally, to serve the party spoon tower I have used a cheap vanity mirror I found at the discount shop. I glued 3 glass stones to the base so it is easy to pick up.

Colour Mixing ‘Mocktails’

This is an easy activity for a children’s party. Provide jugs of primary coloured drinks and the children can mix new colours and flavours to make fun ‘mocktails’ For the ingredients, explore the drinks aisle of your local supermarket. If you cannot find the right colours, try adding a little food colouring to lemonade. In these examples I have used a combination of raspberry cordial, lemonade, pineapple juice and colouring. The cups are decorated with ‘Crepe Flower Ties from the previous post.

*Tips* Make a weak solution of blue and a medium/weak solution of red, otherwise the drinks will turn out too dark. If you are using food colouring, try using ‘Rose Pink’ instead of plain red as it will produce a better range of colours.

Easter Cookies

These are made using Milk Arrowroot Biscuits. Chosen, obviously, because they are oval/egg shaped. If you’ve never seen, nor heard of, a Milk Arrowroot, you are clearly not reading this in Australia! But hopefully oval shaped, plain biscuits or cookies are available in your area.

The decorations featured are ‘Sour Straps’ and ‘Mini M&Ms’. However, most supermarkets will have a dazzling array of confectionary to chose from.

Valentines Day: Strawberry Heart Lamingtons

No baking required for these sweet, sticky hearts. The sponge is store bought and the red syrup is little more than whisking a few ingredients together. Of course, you could bake a sponge if you’re really keen. But I personally couldn’t bake anything as good as the shop ones!

Ingredients: sponge cake, unsalted butter, strawberry jelly crystals, icing sugar, desicated coconut and a heart shaped cookie cutter.

(Use the leftover pieces of cake to make extra, mini, lamingtons.)

Australia Day Jelly Cups

*Did you click here expecting to find a 4th of July recipe? Okay, I cheated a little. I’m in Australia and we celebrate ‘Australia Day’ in January. But we have the same colours on our flag as the US – we even have some white stars and red stripes! So I think this crafty recipe can travel abroad. Now, when is Bastille Day?….*

These are very simple to make, but you need to start preparing them 2 days in advance so that the jelly layers have time to set. I found the star sprinkles in IGA. The plastic shot cups can be found at party supplies or discount stores such as Red Dot.

Wobbly Christmas Presents

Lots of people have asked for more information on exactly how to make my ‘Wobbly Christmas Presents’. Don’t forget, these must be kept in the refrigerator until just before serving. Otherwise you will end up with melted presents instead of wobbly ones!

Christmas Cookies

Despite being edible, these cookies are more craft than cooking. Definately no baking involved – promise! All the ingredients are ready made, off-the-shelf products. All that is required is a bit of cutting and sticking.

The most challenging is the “Jelly Present” (pictured above) This is comprised of jelly sliced into a small cube and Writing Icing for the ribbon decoration.

Coconut Christmas Trees

Believe it or not, this is an upturned icecream cone covered in dessicated coconut. I used green food coloring for the coconut and stuck it to the cone with white chocolate. The decorations are edible cachous and glitter icing. Inside are chocolate buttons, but you could fill it with whatever you like. To finish, I used the white chocolate to stick it to a jam biscuit. The children had a go at making their own mini versions using small cones and coloured chocolate pieces. (below)

There are a few steps in the process, but the results are worth the effort. For my next batch I will making a ‘grown ups’ version with white chocolate rocky road filling.
